Highlights EC Red Bull Salzburg vs. EHC Red Bull München
Match summary
Red Bull Munich, helped by an early power play, dominated the early stages. But the tide turned shortly afterwards. Salzburg – who were already missing five players and were further weakened by the absence of Nash Nienhuis and Peter Schneider, who were still recovering from injury – took the lead with two quick goals. Troy Bourke scored from a sharp angle during the power play (8th minute) and Tyler Lewington immediately followed with a thunderbolt under the crossbar (9th minute), which Munich goalkeeper Simon Wolf had no chance of saving. Munich then had more of the play and reduced the deficit before the break. Adam Brooks flicked the puck from the slot past a defender and Salzburg goalkeeper David Kickert into the net (18th minute).
Less than a minute after the restart, Munich equalized to make it 2-2, with Gabriel Fontaine scoring on the power play. The game then went back and forth for a long time, but without any major chances for either side. In the 33rd minute, Simon Wolf prevented Salzburg from scoring again when the puck was left unattended for a long time during a scramble. The final phase belonged to Munich, who were unable to convert two power plays into goals. This was also thanks to David Kickert, who made a big save against the unmarked Patrick Hager (36th minute). 2-2 after 40 minutes.
The next penalty in the final period was one too many. Tobias Rieder pushed the puck over the line on the rebound and gave Munich a 3-2 lead (46th minute). This was followed by many more penalty minutes for Salzburg, which Munich exploited mercilessly. The Germans struck three more times, ultimately sealing the deal in a game that had been evenly matched until the second intermission. Salzburg ultimately lost 2-6 and had to give way to their “colleagues” from Munich in the battle for third place.
Salzburg Head Coach Manny Viveiros
“We lost 2-6, but we were also missing seven good players. However, we fought hard until the end with a good attitude, and I'm proud of the team.”
