Austria reaches World Cup quarter-finals - for the first time in 31 years! A successful World Cup: Austria finishes the tournament in the top 8 in the world.// National TeamThe Austrian national team fought its way through to the quarter-finals at the 2025 IIHF World Championship in Stockholm, clearly surpassing its major goal of staying in the first class.
The last time the red-white-red team reached the quarter-finals was in 1994. Peter Schneider sums up the World Cup as follows: “A great tournament in which we were able to achieve all our goals.”

Impressions of the 2025 World Championships in Sweden and Denmark
Team manager Roger Bader's squad played their group matches in the Avicii Arena against Finland, Sweden, Slovakia, Canada, France, Slovenia and Latvia. The team then faced Switzerland in the quarter-finals in Denmark, where the tournament ended after a defeat for Austria.

"We had three goals at the start of the tournament: The main goal was to remain in the top group next year. Secondly, we wanted to win three games. Thirdly, we wanted to win a fourth game and reach the quarter-finals."
This means that all of the team's goals were achieved. The main goal of staying in the top flight was exceeded and with this result, Austria will also be represented at the 2026 World Cup in Switzerland and is now in the top flight for the seventh year in a row.
Austria's top scorers at the World Championships
Austria's top scorers at the World Championships were Peter Schneider, Dominik Zwerger and Marco Kasper, each with 7 points. Goalkeeper David Kickert was also particularly outstanding, contributing significantly to Austria's success.
The other Salzburg players in the Austrian national team also made an important contribution to the team's success. These include captain Thomas Raffl, goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen and forwards Niki Kraus and Lucas Thaler. Paul Stapelfeldt, from the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy, also played all eight games in the World Championship squad and will play for the Graz99ers from next season.
