Course of the game
The Red Bulls started the game with an early goal from Florian Baltram (2), who finished off a 3-on-1 counter-attack with ice-cold precision, and initially set the tone. The Carinthians woke up with the first top-class chance from Nick Pastujov (6'), who shot from half distance at full stretch. This was followed by further dangerous shots on goal from Atte Tolvanen. The Red Bulls also kept moving forward, so the game went up and down with changing opportunities and the pace increased. In the 18th minute, the Red Bulls were lucky when Klagenfurt's Thomas Hundertpfund only hit the pad of the Salzburg goalie who was lying on the ground; Nash Nienhuis slid into the shot at the last moment and prevented the equalizer. Shortly afterwards, Peter Schneider had another good chance with a backhand close to goal (19th). The Red Bulls led 1:0 after the first 20 minutes.
The KAC came out of the locker room with a lot of energy in the second period, but Salzburg scored again. Scott Kosmachuk first with a shot from the slot and then Niki Kraus converted the rebound for a 2:0 lead (23'). There was then a lot of fighting on the ice, but with fewer clear-cut opportunities. In the 9th minute, Atte Tolvanen fended off a shot against the bar while short-handed. As the game progressed, the home side had more offensive chances and Daniel Obersteiner narrowly missed with a hammer shot from half distance (35'). The Red Bulls defended strongly and Scott Kosmachuk had a good chance unexpectedly, but could not get past Sebastian Dahm on his own (37'). After another even second period, Salzburg took the 2:0 lead into the dressing room.
The final period began like a copy of the two previous periods with an early goal from the Red Bulls. Benjamin Nissner netted after a short solo run alone in front of Sebastian Dahm to make it 3:0 (41'). This time the answer came, Raphael Herburger scored the home side's first goal with a low shot from close range (44'). In the same minute, Atte Tolvanen fended off a strong 2-on-1 counter-attack, followed by a save against Thomas Hundertpfund's one-timer (47'). But the Salzburg defense was on top of its game again in the ensuing short-handed game. The Red Bulls then played forward again and Lucas Thaler hit the bar (52'). The game went back and forth until the end, including six Klagenfurt field players, but the Red Bulls were not to be denied the victory, even with Atte Tolvanen once again really strong.
