Starting position
After the narrow 2:1 overtime win in the first final game in Klagenfurt, the Red Bulls recorded a clear victory yesterday in the second final game in Salzburg with a compact and cohesive team performance and did not give the KAC much space or chances. Salzburg's Head Coach Oliver David spoke of a lucky win after the first game, but yesterday he saw a well-deserved success for his team and wants to bring the same performance to the ice with his team tomorrow in Klagenfurt.
Klagenfurt's Head Coach Kirk Furey had quickly put yesterday's game behind him and, despite the 2-0 deficit, spoke in the post-game interview of a long series that is only now really getting going. The Red Bulls are prepared for a KAC that will not want to repeat the mistakes from the last game and will come out of the dressing room with full (home) power.
Defense made the difference
Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen faced 27 shots yesterday and stopped them all. Klagenfurt's goalie Sebastian Dahm faced 35 shots, four of which the Dane was unable to stop. Salzburg's Finnish goalkeeper therefore had the better catch rate in the first two finals, and the Red Bulls' defense blocked many of Klagenfurt's shots before they could reach the goal. This was symbolized by the visitors' almost two-minute 5:3 power play in the final period, which the KAC was unable to exploit even in some of Salzburg's most dicey situations.
