Course of the game
The Red Bulls started the game in Bruneck with many good shots, today also with Ryan Murphy again, so that only Thomas Raffl was missing due to convalescence. Peter Hochkofler, Benjamin Nissner and Troy Bourke tried their luck from the slot, but initially only hit the home side's goalie Edward Pasquale. Brad Findlay soon had the first good chance for the home side (6th), who then took the momentum completely on their side and kept Salzburg's defense busy. Goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen saved a number of Pustertal shots from promising positions, but he was unable to stop Tommaso Traversa's rebound (14'). Salzburg then got in front of goal again, Mario Huber missed the equalizer with a solo effort (16'). Bruneck's Ol Einar Andersen struck the bar with a shot from distance (17'). The home side led 1:0 after an intense first period.
Again, the Red Bulls had the better start to the third period, Dennis Robertson scored on his own (21st). Scott Kosmachuk, however, took his chance a little later and scored from an acute angle into the short corner to equalize (26'). A brief period of pressure was enough for the home side to take the lead again. Jason Akeson put the ball into the far corner from half distance (28'), Atte Tolvanen was out of sight. But now it was up and down with top chances on both sides. Troy Bourke had one, but could only finish with his backhand in front of goal (37'). Salzburg created a lot of traffic in front of goal, but shortly before the break, the home side capitalized on the first power play of the game and took a two-goal lead into the dressing room.
Salzburg fought. The Red Bulls went the distance and fought back, but now found it difficult to create chances against a strong Pustertal side. Lucas Thaler tried a powerful shot from the slot (46'), followed by Niki Kraus (47'). However, the Pustertal Wolves defended skillfully and also remained dangerous going forward, even though the Red Bulls now had most of the possession. But then the Pustertal goal suddenly rang, Benjamin Nissner deflected Florian Baltram's shot to make it 2:3 (55'). Salzburg kept at it and in their first own powerplay, Dennis Robertson managed to equalize 3:3 with a deflected shot (59'), thus sending the game into extra time. Andrew Rowe sealed the deal after 40 seconds right in front of goal and secured the Red Bulls' hard-fought away win.
