Course of the game
The Red Bulls started with a lot of pressure and created some good chances early on, which bounced off Asiago goalkeeper Marco Constantini for a long time. The home side barely got into the game, but promptly took advantage of their first 2-on-1 counter-attack with Alexander Ierullo's goal to take the lead (8'). The Red Bulls had the answer: less than a minute later, Troy Bourke converted Florian Baltram's short pass right on target to equalize (9'). The Red Bulls soon dictated the action again and Scott Kosmachuk put the Red Bulls ahead for the first time when he luckily got the disc on his stick in the attacking third and put it under the crossbar with feeling (18th). Before that, Asiago's Lorenzo Casetti suffered an injury after crashing into the boards during a check and had to be stretchered off the ice. We would like to take this opportunity to wish him all the best and a speedy recovery.
At the start of the second period, Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen initially prevented Matteo Gennaro's solo effort from threatening to equalize (21'). The Red Bulls then took over again, showing great willingness to run and knocking on the opposing goal time and again, interrupted only by a few forays by the home side. They created a number of good chances, but the home side's defense proved a tough nut to crack. In the 40th minute, Scott Kosmachuk struck the bar after a solo effort and, on the counter-attack, Nicholas Saracino also scored after a short solo run and against the run of play to make it 2:2 at the break.
The picture was the same again in the final third: Salzburg played and created chances, Asiago waited for the dangerous counter-attacks. In the 49th minute, the Red Bulls were finally rewarded with the lead again, Mario Huber putting the puck under the crossbar from an acute angle to make it 3:2. But Asiago remained dangerous, Nicholas Saracino just missed the puck after a breakaway with the goal half-open (52'). Six minutes later, the home side actually equalized again and this time Nicholas Saracino scored for the second time that evening (58'). The game went into goalless overtime, in which both teams alternated top chances but were unable to convert them. Only Matteo Gennaro finally scored in the penalty shoot-out to seal the Red Bulls' 4:3 defeat in Asiago, who would have deserved far more than just a point if they had made better use of their chances.
