At the four-nation tournament in Oslo, the Austro-Finn will now open a new chapter, as it will be his first game with the ÖEHV team, whose players - with the exception of Salzburg - he has only got to know as opponents so far. We wanted to know how he got on with his new team-mates in the first few days.
Atte, how was the first meeting with your largely new team-mates?
It was a bit strange, as I hardly knew anyone. But I know most of them at least by sight from the ICE Hockey League, plus a few guys who play in Sweden, for example. But I was well received and I'm happy to be part of it now.
How did the first training sessions go? Did you have to change your tactics compared to the Red Bulls?
Not much, it's almost the same. The puck is the same, the goal is the same. My job is the same as always, no matter what happens in front of me on the ice.
How do you handle the language? Everyone speaks German...
Everything is discussed in German. But I now understand almost everything in the team meetings. I also wanted the goalie coach to speak German with me, so I can improve my German every day. I've been around with German speakers for a while now and whenever I get the chance, I try to speak German. In addition, the language of hockey is characterized by a lot of English technical terms anyway, so I get along well.
What is your favorite or most used German word at the moment?
Definitely Mahlzeit. You hear it all the time. And Oida.
How excited are you about your first game?
Very much. But I'm just looking forward to playing here and gaining my first experience with the team.
What are your long-term goals with the Austrian national team?
I want to play in world championships and, of course, take part in the Olympic Games. The next possible ones for us are in five years' time [2030 in Nice and the French Alps]. Until then, I want to continue to develop and help the Austrian team achieve these goals.
