Course of the game
Peter Schneider was back with the Red Bulls, but seven players including Thomas Raffl were still missing from today's lineup. The Red Bulls recorded the first shot on goal with Tyler Lewington (2nd), but the visitors took the early lead with their first attack. Guus van Nes made his way in front of Atte Tolvanen's goal and scored into the corner of the net (3rd). Salzburg tried to take the game into their own hands, but Guus van Nes again found a way through the uncertain Salzburg defense from close range and increased the visitors' lead to 2:0 (8'). The home side then stepped up their attacking game with many long-range shots on VSV keeper Jean Philippe Lamoureux's goal, but were unable to beat the veteran in the first half. There were chances: Andrew Rowe with a follow-up shot (17'), Florian Baltram with a one-timer from close range (18') or Scott Kosmachuk from the right face-off circle (18').
Scott Kosmachuk had the next great opportunity, coming from the penalty box only JP Lamoureux prevented Salzburg's first goal (25.). Peter Schneider then made it happen, scoring from the faceoff circle in the power play and hitting the crossbar (27). This really got the Red Bulls going, but Guus van Nes scored the third goal in the powerplay after a rebound (32'). Just six seconds later, Benjamin Nissner was sent on his way by Lukas Schreier directly from the face-off in the center circle and completed his solo run to make it 2:3 (32'). The game then went back and forth with good chances on both sides. After 40 minutes, the Red Bulls were only one goal behind.
Then the Red Bulls' onslaught began. Initially, they played almost exclusively in the offensive zone and applied a lot of pressure. Lukas Hörl had a free shot from the slot (42'). But it was tight in front of the Villach goal and VSV relied on their counter-attacks, which made them highly dangerous. Then it became more hectic, it went up and down again. And again and again there were scrambles in front of the Villach goal, but without luck for the Red Bulls. Scott Kosmachuk had the chance at full stretch, but could only finish with a backhand (56'). The equalizer was in the air. Troy Bourke hit the bar from distance (58') and was served right in front of goal (60'). But it was not to be, and the Red Bulls ultimately lost 3-2 to a strong and efficient VSV after an intense final phase.
