Course of the game
The Red Bulls came onto the ice really fresh after the recent short break and with three returning players and immediately took control of the game. They combined in front of Rasmus Reijola's goal, who had a lot to do right away. He was able to save the first top chance from Lukas Schreier free in the slot (5th). Mario Huber's shot in the powerplay from the left face-off circle was not (8.). Salzburg continued to press and Tyler Lewington, left completely alone, flicked the disc into the net with feeling for a 2:0 lead (11.). The visitors became more offensive towards the end of the third, but were still unable to challenge goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen. Further good opportunities for the home side - Luca Auer free at the left post (15th) - underlined the deserved 2:0 lead after 20 minutes.
After the break, the visitors' top scorer, Chris Brown, made his first mark with a hard shot from half distance (21'). The Red Bulls kept at it and increased the lead with the help of the opposing goalie, whose shot by Lucas Thaler bounced off his helmet and into the goal (22'). The visitors then got better. However, Atte Tolvanen was unlucky with the follow-up goal, he didn't see the disk that was in front of his pad and Chase Berger had an easy game (26.). But with a lot of willingness to run, the Red Bulls shifted the game more and more into the offensive zone and did a good job even when short-handed. Salzburg were still the better team after 40 minutes and led 3:1.
The Red Bulls also controlled the encounter for the most part in the final period, but now had to hold their own against harder-working visitors who shot considerably more. Nevertheless, the Red Bulls continued to create good chances. Thomas Raffl had one on his return directly in front of goal (49'). Towards the end, the pressure from the Hungarians increased, but with consistent defensive work even in a late short-handed game and a safe Atte Tolvanen in goal, the Red Bulls did not let anything happen. And Atte Tolvanen himself finally scored into the empty net to make the final score 4:1. It was the third goal of his career for the Austrian Finn, the last time he scored against Linz a year ago.
