Course of the game
The Red Bulls welcomed Adrian Gesson, a new debutant from the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy, to their ranks for the New Year's Day game in Linz. The 18-year-old forward from Feldkirch has been at the academy since 2020 and today strengthened the Salzburg lineup for the first time, which had to make do without Scott Kosmachuk (lower body) in addition to the six players already missing today.
After a powerful start by Linz, they took an early lead. Sean Collins poked the disc over the line during a scrum in front of Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen's goal (4th). But just 19 seconds later, Benjamin Nissner flicked the disc into the net from an acute angle after a short pass from Peter Schneider and immediately equalized (5). That was the start of the game, which went up and down with changing opportunities and good intensity. The teams went into the first break at 1:1.
After an initially even game, the Red Bulls took the lead after the break. Troy Bourke scored from close range to make it 2:1 and gave Rasmus Tirronen in the Linz goal no chance (25'). After that, Salzburg controlled the game for the most part and kept the ball in the offensive zone a lot. Linz only became really dangerous again in a powerplay (from the 34th minute), in which they created good chances. It became more intense in the final phase, but the Red Bulls did not let themselves be lured out of their shell and took their lead into the dressing rooms after 40 minutes.
Linz stepped up the pace in the final period, but the Red Bulls remained alert defensively and defused the attacks early on. The home side nevertheless managed to equalize during a powerplay, with Atte Tolvanen having no chance with Sean Collins' deflected goal (47'). That gave Linz the momentum in an increasingly intense game. But the Red Bulls fought back and Ryan Murphy gave Salzburg the lead again with a spectacular one-timer from the right face-off circle (51'). The Black Wings now pressed vehemently, while the Red Bulls tried to calm things down with an orderly build-up. There were good shots on both sides. Two and a half minutes before the end, the home side took the goalie off the ice and Peter Schneider scored into the empty net to give the Red Bulls a deserved 4:2 New Year's win at the Black Wings Linz.
