Course of the game
A total of eight convalescing Salzburg players had to miss out today, but 18-year-old academy forward Adrian Gesson was delighted to make his home debut in the ICE Hockey League after playing on professional ice for the first time two days ago in Linz. Despite the home side's early initiative, the game was slow to get going. The Red Bulls pushed forward more and more as the third period progressed and the chances of scoring improved. The visitors, also without a number of regulars, tried a lot of concealed shots from distance. Vienna goalkeeper Sebastian Wraneschitz defused Nash Nienhuis' shot from the face-off circle (16'). Salzburg's David Kickert thwarted the best chance in the first period from Vienna's Jeremy Gregoire, who shot freely in front of goal (19'). The teams went into the break goalless after 20 minutes.
Goals were then to come after the break. Just 27 seconds after the restart, Evan Jasper converted a rebound to give Vienna the lead. The visitors then had further good opportunities. But Mario Huber equalized first, scoring from an acute angle into the short corner (24'). The visitors went ahead again, Mathias Böhm deflecting a shot straight in front of David Kickert (27'). And just three minutes later, Evan Jasper increased the lead to 3:1 for the Viennese with a goal into the far corner at 2-on-1. Salzburg then upped the tempo and laid siege to their opponents' goal, with Ryan Murphy hitting the bar from distance (33'). The Red Bulls had a chance to close the gap, with Lukas Hörl, among others, getting as far as the goal, only to fail to finish with his backhand (39'). The Capitals also had two or three dangerous chances and led 3:1 after 40 minutes.
In the final third, the Red Bulls increasingly shifted the game into the offensive zone. Many shots got stuck in the defense and some chances lacked luck. Like Andrew Rowe, who deflected the shot inches past the goal in the power play (47'). The Red Bulls' shooting continued, from distance or after combinations. However, the visitors' defense stood firm and Sebastian Wraneschitz also had a hand in a number of strong shots. In the 58th minute, Evan Jasper finally scored his third goal into the empty Salzburg net to make the final score 4:1 from the visitors' point of view.
