Match report
Once again with a decimated team - in addition to four long-term injuries, the convalescents Thomas Raffl, Peter Schneider and Lucas Thaler as well as Phillip Sinn were missing due to the squad regulations - the Red Bulls had to face Klagenfurt in the game of the round. The game was immediately heated up, with Raphael Herburger putting the home side ahead after just 28 seconds. The expected close duel then developed with plenty of pace and intense duels. In which the Red Bulls were initially hardly able to create any compelling chances, but the KAC, who were a little more forceful, were rarely dangerous in front of goal. Simeon Schwinger, for example, was unable to beat Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen after a good forecheck (7th), while Salzburg's Ryan Murphy got stuck on the far post with a good attempt at a farmer's trick (15th). Both teams played very disciplined and mostly neutralized each other in the good first period. Klagenfurt led 1:0 after 20 minutes.
After a penalty-free first period, things became more aggressive after the break. Salzburg with two overpayments, including a shot with a stick (25th), in between a powerplay by the hosts. The game then flattened out a little before the goals suddenly came at the end. Dennis Robertson equalized from the blue line in the powerplay (37'). That gave the Red Bulls an extra boost and Troy Bourke scored to give them the lead for a short time when he thoughtfully tapped in a rebound from the boards (40'). But six seconds before the break, the KAC equalized to make it 2:2, Atte Tolvanen had no chance against Daniel Obersteiner's deflected shot (40').
It became even more intense. Both teams pressed forward and played for the next goal. But it was tight in front of goal on both sides, no one wanted to make a defensive mistake. The Red Bulls were now the more active team, but still hardly got into shooting positions. But in a strong phase for Klagenfurt, Tobias Sablattnig took a shot from distance and scored into the corner of the net (55'). Daniel Obersteiner followed up just two minutes later (57') and made sure of the preliminary decision. Nick Petersen scored an empty net goal ten seconds before the end to make it 5:2. The Red Bulls thus also lost their third game of the season against the KAC, but would have deserved at least one point again today.
