Course of the game
Still without five injured players and the suspended Dennis Robertson, but with Troy Bourke back in the lineup, the Red Bulls went into the game against the Graz99ers. And it started as planned. Philipp Krening got into a shooting position in the 1st minute and nailed the shot into the net for an early lead. Graz then showed what makes them so dangerous, with goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen having his hands full with several great chances in front of the Salzburg goal. It went up and down. Scott Kosmachuk could not get past Graz goalkeeper Jonas Gunnarsson alone at the right post (9'). Both teams created good chances in transition and the game was not short of physical play. The Red Bulls shot a lot in two consecutive overtime games without success, but shortly afterwards Peter Hochkofler (17) took the measure from the half-high slot and scored to give them a 2:0 lead. However, the visitors reduced the lead before the break, with Lukas Haudum netting from the right face-off circle in the power play to make it 1-2 from Graz's perspective.
Changing momentum, good shots. The second period was also balanced and hard-fought at first. Graz then began to exert more pressure, with Atte Tolvanen defending a chance from Casey Bailey, who had plenty of time in front of goal (26'). The Red Bulls continued to have opportunities, but the visitors were a tick closer to the next goal. Lukas Haudum finally scored again in the power play to equalize the score at 2:2 from half distance without Atte Tolvanen being able to see (38'). This was also the score going into the second break.
The Red Bulls fired up the turbo in the final period and were a real threat in the opening minutes. Graz quickly freed itself from the defensive and opened up the game again. But the Red Bulls played more aggressively going forward and had more offensive possession. Benjamin Nissner had the next great chance in front of the goalie in the powerplay (48'). Suddenly, Graz's Trevor Gooch also had the disc on his stick directly in front of Atte Tolvanen, but failed (53'). After another Salzburg short-handed game with a strong Atte Tolvanen, a wild final phase ensued in which nobody was able to score. Overtime had to decide the game and Scott Kosmachuk hammered the disc into the corner in a 4:3 power play. The Red Bulls thus won their first meeting of the season against the Graz99ers 3:2 after overtime, but had to fight hard for it.
