Course of the game
The Red Bulls, still without six regulars, were unable to get out of the offensive zone in the opening minutes. Nevertheless, the visitors had the first top chance, Robert Sabolic failing to beat Salzburg goalkeeper David Kickert after a solo run (5th minute). The Red Bulls then struck twice. Luca Auer scored with a classic rebound directly in front of Ljulbjana goalkeeper Lukas Horak (9') and just 31 seconds later Benjamin Nissner netted from half distance (9'). It was only then that the visitors became active going forward, creating opportunities and opening up the game. However, Salzburg defender Chay Genoway had the best chance before the break, almost giving himself a present on his 38th birthday after a short solo run (19th). The Red Bulls deservedly led 2:0 after 20 minutes against the improving visitors.
The Red Bulls continued to dominate proceedings in the second period to begin with, but the Slovenians disrupted the action better than before and got on the offensive themselves. David Kickert saved a double chance from close range (23'). His counterpart Lukas Horak was able to do the same for a long time during a Red Bulls powerplay, but he was powerless against Mario Huber's goal from an acute angle for a 3:0 lead (34'). The home side regained control of the game in the final minutes and took a comfortable three-goal lead into the dressing room after 40 minutes.
The game started into the final period with an overtime goal by the visitors, Ziga Pance scored on a 2-on-1 right into the corner of the net (42'). The answer was not long in coming, with Scott Kosmachuk also scoring in the power play, tapping the ball into the crossbar (44'). The Slovenians then reduced the deficit again, Jaka Sodja choking the ball over the goal line in front of David Kickert (44'). Salzburg then pressed harder again and had the better opportunities. Luca Auer then made the most of a short solo run to make it 5:2 and celebrate his first league brace for the professionals (53'). Thomas Raffl scored to make it 6:2 (57') and seal a clear victory against Olimpija Ljubljana.
