Course of the game
Atte Tolvanen prevented the home side's lightning start when he stopped Michael Lindqvist's solo run after 11 seconds. Andrew Rowe had the first good shot on Karlstad's goal from the slot (6th). The Red Bulls, with the exception of Scott Kosmachuk and four long-term injuries, were quickly in the game, but the Swedes pressed more and were more dangerous in front of goal, even if there was still nothing unstoppable. The Red Bulls defended with concentration and were also well positioned when they were short-handed for the first time. It became more intense in the final phase, but the Red Bulls were now on a par offensively and showed more drive towards the goal. Overall, Färjestad had more of the first period, but Salzburg held on to their two-goal lead.
Thomas Raffl came close to scoring the first goal after the restart with a one-timer following a counter-attack (21'). However, it was Lucas Forsell at the other end (22'), who scored from full stretch into the far corner from half distance. This was followed by a strong spell for the home side, in which Atte Tolvanen and his front men worked hard to prevent the next impending goal. But then it happened: Marcus Westfält converted his chance in front of goal from a breakaway to level the scores at 3:3 (26'). The Red Bulls kept trying to play forward, Thomas Raffl got the disc right in front of Färjestad goalie Maxime Lagace (31.). But the Swedes kept pressing and scored again through Axel Bergkvist after a nice combination (32.). Färjestad now showed all its class, shifting the game completely into the attacking zone, Atte Tolvanen excelled a few more times. The game was turned around after 40 minutes, with Karlstad now leading 4:3 on aggregate.
At the start of the final period, Salzburg suddenly turned up the heat and had a number of good shots. But even during a power play (from 47), goalkeeper Maxime Lagace could not be beaten. And Alexander Ljungkrantz scored directly from the bench after the end of the short-handed game to increase Karlstad's lead to 4:0 (49'). David Tomášek's quick powerplay goal to make it 5:0 (50') was the preliminary decision, even though the Red Bulls continued to fight hard and were unlucky with a few chances at the end. Oskar Steen's empty-net goal - the Red Bulls had tried everything from the 55th minute onwards - in the 57th minute marked the 6:0 final score. The Red Bulls were thus clearly defeated in Karlstad and were eliminated from the playoffs with an overall score of 3:7.
