Match report
The game got off to a brisk start. The Red Bulls (without the long-term injured Florian Baltram, the ill Atte Tolvanen and Mario Huber, who had stayed at home while expecting his second child) had the first three minutes, but then the home side were also dangerous in front of goal. With two or three passes to the man in front of Salzburg goalkeeper David Kickert, who was watching out. Lucas Thaler produced a good shot from half distance after two hooks (11'), but it was no problem for the Austrian goalkeeper in Lakers kit, 19-year-old Benedikt Oschgan from Linz. The Swedes were increasingly dangerous in front of Salzburg's goal and caused a few tricky situations, which David Kickert solved. In the 16th minute, the disc hit the bar during the first Swedish powerplay. The home side then took the lead (17'), the deflected puck from Ludvig Nilsson (17') could not be stopped. Ryan Murphy added a sign of things to come with a hammer shot from distance (19), but the Red Bulls trailed by one goal at the first break.
After a brief spell of pressure at the start of the second period, Peter Hochkofler had a follow-up shot right in front of goal (22'), but could not find the gap in the scrum. The Red Bulls were now more aggressive in the duels and gained significantly more possession in the offensive zone. It went up and down, with Benjamin Nissner taking the next chance free in the slot (28'). Peter Hochkofler then missed a quick pass to the post in the power play (32') and Ryan Murphy narrowly missed the goal on a 3-on-2 (34'). Salzburg continued to have more chances until the second break and were the better team in the second period, but were unable to score.
The Red Bulls continued to try to make the play and get shots against the tight defense. Växjö's Anton Linde suddenly found himself in front of David Kickert, who made a strong save (45'). The game was fiercely contested, with both sides alternating between dangerous scenes and good shots on goal. In the 50th minute, Lucas Thaler scored the deserved equalizer with a backhand shot from the slot, the Lakers goalie had hardly any vision - and then had to make way for Adam Ahman. However, the Red Bulls now played like they were on fire and actually scored twice more in the final phase in the power play! Peter Schneider hammered the disc into the net from the Bulls' point (59') and shortly afterwards Ryan Murphy also scored from the slot in the same overtime spell to make it 3:1 (59'), meaning the Red Bulls have already qualified for the round of 16 ahead of time with four wins from five CHL games.
