Game recap
The Red Bulls were without most of their key players for the eagerly awaited league opener in Klagenfurt. No fewer than seven players, including defensemen Chay Genoway, Ryan Murphy and Dennis Robertson, were missing due to illness or injury. Instead, 19-year-old Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy defender Maximilian Kirchebner made his debut with the Red Bulls in the win2day ICE Hockey League, while Nash Nienhuis and Andrew Rowe also played their first game in the top domestic league.
The game started without much ado with a lot of speed and tough duels, as both teams already have four CHL games under their belts. The KAC exerted a lot of pressure at the start and became a real threat with two or three point-blank shots, including from Danish newcomer Mathias From. The Red Bulls only broke out of their defensive shell after a few minutes and also got in front of goal, but without having any great opportunities. Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen was on hand in the 14th minute when Mathias From once again made a good run to the front of the goal. The Red Bulls had their best spell shortly before the break, but Klagenfurt goalkeeper Sebastian Dahm was not to be denied. After a very intense 20 minutes, the teams went into the dressing rooms scoreless.
That changed quickly in the second period, after 40 seconds Mathias From scored directly in front of goal to give the KAC the lead (21'). Salzburg were now better in the game and had their first top chance with a deflected shot off the crossbar from Benjamin Nissner (25'). A little later, Peter Schneider took a direct shot from distance in the power play and put it into the corner of the net with a hammer shot (27'). It continued to go back and forth until Andrew Rowe netted from half-distance after a strong individual performance and scored his first league goal for the Red Bulls to give them a 2:1 lead at the break (37').
Atte Tolvanen took center stage in the opening minutes of the final period, thwarting a number of good opportunities for the home side right in front of his goal. However, the Red Bulls increased their lead to 3:1 after surviving the defensive phase with a deflected shot from Peter Hochkofler (53'). The KAC then pressed and actually managed to equalize with two powerplay goals - Jan Mursak (55) and Mathias From (14 seconds before the end). After a goalless overtime, Klagenfurt finally won the penalty shootout and sealed the defeat of the Red Bulls, who at least took a point with them after a combative game featuring a number of young players.
