Game recap
With Chay Genoway as captain - Thomas Raffl and Florian Baltram were given a break - the Red Bulls went into the final game and played a game at eye level with Jokerit. Salzburg's young forward Philipp Krening had the first top chance to take the lead early on with a solo shot (2nd). The Red Bulls then had to make do with one man less three times in a row, but did so brilliantly. Both teams then had some very good chances, but the strong goalkeepers Atte Tolvanen, who was a bench player especially in the Finns' powerful final phase, and Sisu Heikkeri (Jokerit) were the end of the line. After a fast and intense first period, the teams went into the break goalless.
Atte Tolvanen was also on hand in the second period, whose opening phase was dominated by Jokerit. He thwarted two chances against free-standing players. The Red Bulls had good offensive forays, but were repeatedly forced back with further penalties. In the 30th minute, Jokerit took the lead at 4 vs. 4, Sako Forsblom scored from half-distance. Shortly afterwards, Atte Tolvanen made way in goal for the planned change to 21-year-old Thomas Pfarrmaier from Salzburg. On his debut a little later, Pfarrmaier was denied by Santeri Haakana's follow-up shot, which gave Jokerit a 2:0 lead. Leevi Lemberg then used the numerical advantage for the first time to give Jokerit a 3:0 lead at the break in a period that became very rough at the end. Salzburg's Luca Auer was unlucky with a hammer shot on the crossbar (37').
The Red Bulls started the final period with two good chances in the powerplay. Chay Genoway hit the bar (44'), Peter Hochkofler did not get the right pass in front of an empty goal (45'). Jokerit goalie Sisu Heikkeri once again showed his class during two more Salzburg powerplays, with Salzburg once again setting the tone. But Jokerit kept at it and in the 56th minute Leevi Lemberg scored a one-timer from half distance. Jesse Liuksiala then scored from the penalty spot (58') to seal Salzburg's 5-0 defeat, but the Red Bulls' chances were not enough.
