Vojens puts on the gold helmets again after nine years Thomas Raffl: “Will treat the Danes with the respect they deserve” // CHLAfter the CHL opener against Skellefteå AIK on September 6, the next home game in the European premier league follows two days later, when the golden-helmeted Danish champions SønderjyskE Vojens visit the Eisarena Salzburg.
And once again it's champions against champions when the Red Bulls meet the current Danish champions at home. Salzburg's Head Coach Oliver David warns: “SønderjyskE is a powerhouse, but admittedly not as well-known as other teams.” The Red Bulls have also had this experience in the past, but won three out of four games against the Danes between 2006 and 2015. The last two meetings were in the CHL group stage in August 2015; Vojens won 4:1 at home and the Red Bulls prevailed 7:2 in Salzburg.

In 2015, SønderjyskE Vojens also won the last championship title before the club struck again last season for the seventh time in total after a long dry spell - traditionally honored with the golden helmets. Head coach Anders Førster, who still knows the club well as an active player, is responsible for the success. A striker from 2013 to 2021, he took over as assistant coach immediately after his last season in Denmark's top league and was promoted to head coach last season. To win the title on his debut at the age of just 36, something he also achieved once as a player in 2014.

The roster (as of 30.7.24) currently consists of 11 Danes, five Swedes and two Canadians, after seven players left the club after last season - three veterans retired for good - and only five players have joined so far. Further new additions are expected before the CHL duel with the Red Bulls.

Thomas Raffl vs. SønderjyskE-Vojens | 2015
Only one member of the current Salzburg team has direct experience with the Danes: Thomas Raffl played both CHL games against SønderjyskE in August 2015 before setting off on his NHL-AHL adventure to North America shortly afterwards. However, he has hardly any memories of the games back then: “That was some time ago. But when you become champion, it doesn't matter which league you play in. You have to do a lot of things right to win in the end. That's why we'll treat the Danish champions with the respect they deserve and are looking forward to a great game. The home advantage should also play into our hands.”

24 teams play in the regular season. Each team has six games against six different opponents, which are allocated by lot. This means that each team has three home games and three away games against six different opponents. Teams from the same league cannot play each other in the regular season. The results of the regular season (3-point ranking) are used to produce a ranking of all 24 teams.
The first 16 teams qualify for the play-off round of 16, with 1st playing against 16th, 2nd against 15th and so on. This results in the playoff tree up to the final. The play-off matches are decided by a first and second leg, with the total number of goals (aggregate score) being decisive in the event of a tie. Only the final is decided in an all-important match.
