It is the best placing in 23 years: The last time the Austrians achieved a 10th place in the concert of the greats was at the 2003 World Championships in Finland. On the way there, team boss Roger Bader's team caused a great deal of excitement. This included a 5-goal comeback and a point win against world champions Canada, a 3:2 victory against Olympic champions Finland and a narrow 5:6 defeat against Switzerland, who finished the group games in second place behind Canada.
The only downer: the final defeat against England prevented a possible quarter-final appearance. But that doesn't diminish the Austrians' overall strong performance, said Benjamin Nissner after the initial disappointment: “The tournament was incredible, the team was great. I really wanted the team to progress. But let's forget it, the tournament was sensational, the team has grown together so much!”
Austria will therefore also play at the World Championships in Stockholm (Sweden) and Herning (Denmark) in 2025 and has now been in the top flight for six years. Austria's last long series of tournaments in the world's top 16 was from 1998 to 2005.
