Game recap
Lots of emotion right at the start of the game. The opening exchanges were characterized by a lot of hectic action and tough tackles. Linz's Graham Knott tested Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen with a shot from the half-left (2'), three minutes later Drake Rymsha missed a hard cross in front of the visitors' goal from Rasmus Tirronen (5'). The game continued to go back and forth at a high tempo, with battles dominating the game and no one gaining a real advantage for long periods. It was a struggle for every centimeter of ice, in which both goalkeepers did not allow themselves to be taken by surprise with partially concealed shots. In the last three minutes, the Red Bulls played with the advantage (5 min + game time for Shawn St-Amant), but apart from a few good shots from distance, they were unable to take advantage. After a goalless but exciting 20 minutes with a lot of harshness, the teams went into the dressing rooms for the first time.
It got even wilder. It felt like there were scuffles on the ice every few minutes. The Red Bulls were also unable to take advantage of the remaining two minutes of overtime, with Peter Schneider only scoring after the referee's whistle (23rd). But then Salzburg took the lead even when short-handed. Benjamin Nissner missed just in front of goal, but Peter Schneider tucked home his subsequent assist (25'). After that, the moves towards goal became more frequent and more dangerous on both sides and the game remained open. But then came Thomas Raffl's irresistible one-timer from the left face-off circle for a 2:0 lead (35'), perfectly set up by Peter Schneider. The Red Bulls were now in control and had two or three more good chances, but then had to play two consecutive games short-handed. Atte Tolvanen held on to the lead until the second break.
Linz had the first top chance in the final third, Raphael Wolf hitting the crossbar from half-right (43'). The visitors now had a strong phase and created some good opportunities. The home side gradually broke out of their own zone and promptly increased their lead. Drake Rymsha netted Peter Schneider's perfect pass into the half-open goal in the power play (48'). Less than a minute later (49), Drake Rymsha unpacked the hammer and scored a brace from the blue line. That was the preliminary decision. The Red Bulls then dominated the final period, which did not lose any of its toughness, until the end and finally celebrated a deserved 4:0 home win with the second shutout of the season for the strong Finnish goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen.
