High tension ahead of the playoffs Red Bulls start the quarterfinals at home on March 3 // win2day ICE Hockey LeagueLast Friday, the basic round of the win2day ICE Hockey League ended with the 48th round. The Red Bulls lost to HC Pustertal Wölfe in Bruneck and will now go into the playoffs in third place in the table.
The Red Bulls' quarter-final series kicks off next Sunday, March 3, at the Eisarena Salzburg (4:30 p.m. / note: start time subject to change). The Red Bulls started preparing for the playoffs today after the weekend off and we took the opportunity to talk to Florian Baltram, who has already played in many playoff series despite being only 26 years old.
Who will be Salzburg's quarter-final opponent?
The teams in places 1 to 6 after the basic round have qualified directly for the play-off quarter-finals. The first round of the pre-playoff for the teams in 7th to 10th place (best of three) was played yesterday. After the conclusion of the pre-playoffs - on Tuesday if the winners of the first round win again, otherwise on Thursday after the deciding game(s) - the quarter-final pairings will be determined in a playoff pick.
The top 3 teams after the basic round choose their opponent. The fourth-placed team is not available for selection and will face the team that was not selected in the pick. The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final are played in "best of seven" mode. The first team to win four matches will advance to the next round and will be crowned champion.
ICE Hockey League continues with three CHL participants
The winner of the win2day ICE Hockey League and the first two teams in the regular season (KAC and Székesfehérvár) will qualify for the Champions Hockey League 2024/25. If the eventual champion has already qualified, the third CHL starting place in the league will go to the third-placed team in the regular Season.
In the playoffs since 2005/06
In 2004, the Red Bulls made their debut in what is now the international ICE Hockey League. One year later, in the 2005/06 season, they made it to the playoffs, starting with the semi-finals of the top four. Since then, the Red Bulls have always been involved in the post-season and have finished as champions eight times. This year, the Red Bulls have qualified for the playoffs for the 19th time in a row.
In the last ten seasons (with the exception of the 2020 playoffs, which were canceled due to coronavirus), the Salzburgers have reached at least the semi-finals - the longest semi-final run ever achieved by a team in the history of the multinational league.
The longest playoff series the Red Bulls have played in the past went - three times - over 19 games. 2020/11 with the final win against Klagenfurt, 2015/16 with the final win against Znojmo and 2017/18 with the final defeat against Bolzano.
