Course of the game The last game before the two teams met in the final of the Austrian championship got off to a physical start. Both teams set the tone in attack from the very first minute and only just failed to score the opening goal. Characterized by a very high tempo, the game went up and down, but remained goalless - despite an overtime situation for the Polar Bears.
In the second period, the Juniors had an overtime opportunity early on, but were unable to convert it despite a strong chance. However, the young Salzburgers then took control of the game. Philipp Krening, the 19-year-old key player who was seriously injured in pre-season and played only his second league game of the 23/24 season in Zell am See, took advantage of this and gave his team the lead (25'). The Eisbären upped the tempo and pressed for the equalizer, but the Juniors remained strong in defence around Juniors goalkeeper Simon Wolf.
Both teams started the final period with strong chances. The Polar Bears scored the equalizer through Fabio Artner in an early overtime spell (43'). The pace of play increased immediately after that, but the opening goal was a long time coming. Both teams tried to score with an overtime opportunity, but were thwarted by the strong goalkeeping performance of Simon Wolf and Lorenz Widhalm. Zell am See took a penalty in overtime. Philipp Krening made the most of the ensuing 4-on-3 overtime (63'), scoring his brace to give the Red Bull Hockey Juniors a derby away win in Zell am See.

"It was a tough game today, Zell am See played really well. In the end, luck was on our side. It's an amazing feeling to be back after five months! I'm already looking forward to the final. It's definitely going to be two very cool and tough games."
Head Coach Teemu Levijoki
"We weren't prepared for Zell am See's physical play at the start, so we struggled to get into the game. But the win today was important for our confidence. Now we know that we can beat them at home. Nevertheless, we're now concentrating from game to game, and then we'll see what the result is after the next two games. With Philipp Krening, we now have a player back who can score goals. He still needs some time, of course, but he's already on a very good path again."
