Course of the game
The top duel for the lead in the Master Round of the Alps Hockey League got off to a hotly contested start. The Juniors managed to increase the pressure on the Italians thanks to an early overpayment. However, the home side were waiting for the counterattack and Derek Topatigh took the lead in the 3rd minute. Playing at their own strength, the Juniors repeatedly struggled with disc losses and were also unable to score in another overtime spell. WSV remained dangerous and tried to find a gap in the young Salzburg team's defense with its quick reversal play and counterattacks. The Broncos succeeded several times and Angelo Cianfrone (8th) increased the score to 2:0. The Juniors remained unimpressed and got back into the game: Paul Vinzens tied the game in the 13th minute and Julius Ramoser equalized in the 17th minute. At the end of the first period, the Italians once again gave their all and Junior goalkeeper Valentin Ankirchner had his hands full, but could not be beaten.
In the second period, the game started at eye level and went back and forth. The action shifted to the middle third. Both teams had opportunities, but were unable to convert any of them. It took until the 28th minute when Vasily Zelenov gave the Juniors the lead for the first time after a pass from Daniel Assavolyuk. But this did not last long. Adam Capannelli equalized again in the 30th minute. The game then picked up pace again. The Red Bull Hockey Juniors were able to take advantage of this and put enormous pressure on Sterzing. The game became more physical in the final minutes of the second period, but no further goals were scored.
The final period started with an overtime opportunity for the Juniors, but they were unable to capitalize on it. One minute later, Sterzing had a 5-on-3 advantage. The Italians established themselves in the visitors' third, but the young Salzburgers blocked the shots and, together with goalkeeper Ankirchner, survived the dangerous situation with a very strong defensive performance. Both teams tried to take the lead, but despite several chances to gain the advantage, they were unable to do so for the time being. In the last 10 seconds of the game (60th), it was Davide Conci who finally managed to score the decisive goal. The Juniors tried to turn the game around again with a sixth field player, but Adam Capannelli had to concede the goal into an empty net (60').
Head Coach Teemu Levijoki
"It was a very close game today. It's a shame that we didn't make it to overtime. Getting the decisive goal 10 seconds before the end is of course painful. But the lads played very well. We were two goals down, turned the game around and in the end it was just unfortunate."
