Course of the match
The third derby of the season started at eye level. Both teams created their first chances early on in the game, with goalkeepers Wolf and Zimmermann initially proving impossible to beat. After the first five minutes of the game, the home side forced the first pressure phase, creating an overtime situation. Daniel Assavolyuk scored the opening goal after a pass from Vadim Schreiner (6'). The pace of the game increased noticeably and was characterized by fast ups and downs. However, a check in the 14th minute meant that the game had to be interrupted for around 20 minutes due to a broken pane of glass. The referees then decided to hold the break early and play the remaining 7 minutes before the second period. This took the tempo out of the game for a short time, but both teams quickly got back into it. The young Salzburg team initiated another pressure phase and forced Zell am See to take more penalty minutes, but failed to capitalize on this.
The game got off to a more even start in the second period. Both teams fought for every inch and created strong chances. Despite strong opportunities, it took until the 31st minute before the next goal was scored in the game: Daniel Assavolyuk scored again to give the Juniors a 2:0 lead. This unleashed the young Salzburgers. They put the Zeller under pressure with strong moves and the game shifted to the defensive third of the Polar Bears. The visitors were only able to get back into the game when they were outnumbered, but Juniors goalkeeper Simon Wolf remained impregnable for the Polar Bears.
Zell am See began the final period with a superior number. However, the derby opponents were unable to find a way to overcome the home side's defense. The visitors also failed to capitalize on another overtime opportunity. The Juniors defended strongly and hardly allowed any shooting opportunities. Playing at full strength, the young Salzburgers managed to win the duels and control the game. Elias Pul rewarded this with his goal in the 49th minute to take a 3:0 lead. The game then became more physical and the Polar Bears tried everything to stop the Juniors from playing their game. However, the Juniors remained experienced and continued their strong offensive play, but were unable to score another goal. The Polar Bears became dangerous again in the last two minutes of the game when they were outnumbered, but the home side defended strongly. The Red Bull Hockey Juniors thus won the Salzburg derby against EK Die Zeller Eisbären 3:0.
