Game recap
2nd minute chance for Benjamin Nissner from the slot, 3rd minute one-timer from Klagenfurt's Finn van Ee from close range; the game was opened up immediately. In the 7th minute, Ryan Murphy scored on a 5-on-3 power play, but the goal was disallowed. But one minute later, now with a simple overtime, Troy Bourke scored (8th) and this time the goal counted. Then things got hectic. In the 10th minute, two Salzburg defenders were sent to the penalty box for 10 minutes due to incorrect equipment, shortly afterwards the Red Bulls played 3:5 short-handed with three defenders (from the 13th minute) because another one had to go to the penalty box. They survived this phase unscathed with a strong Atte Tolvanen in goal and a lot of effort. In the last five minutes, it was 5 vs. 5 again and now the Red Bulls increased the score to 2:0. Benjamin Nissner extended the disc after a Thomas Raffl shot in the air and Klagenfurt's backstop Sebastian Dahm had to let it pass over his shoulder. That's how it went into the first break after a very emotional opening period.
The game continued in the second half with tough tackles and plenty of pace. Both teams worked vehemently towards the goal, but conversely hardly allowed any good shots at the beginning. Thomas Raffl had one of the rare opportunities after a 3-on-2 attack on the right (50'). But Salzburg's shooting improved and in the second half of the second period, which remained emotionally charged, the Red Bulls gained a visual advantage and better shooting positions. Shortly before the second break, however, the visitors took advantage of another power play to score the equalizer, Johannes Bischofberger putting the concealed shot from half-distance right into the corner of the net to bring the KAC back to 1:2.
In the third period, the Red Bulls dominated the opening phase with plenty of offensive time, but it remained a tough battle for every inch of ice. Paul Huber received the pass on the left post, but was able to finish with a backhand (47'). By now it was an up and down game again and there were repeated overly tough duels. But the attacks were now also highly dangerous on both sides, now it was play-off ice hockey, it was burning alternately in front of both goals. Klagenfurt's pressure increased in the final minutes, but Atte Tolvanen could no longer be beaten. Thomas Raffl and Tim Harnisch both scored into the empty Klagenfurt goal in the final minute to secure a hard-fought 4:1 home win against the league leaders.
