Game recap
The hosts had their first chance in the third minute. Anze Kuralt had a free shot in the slot for a moment and buried the shot behind Salzburg goalie Atte Tolvanen. The Red Bulls then really got into the game and spent a lot of time in the offensive zone, where the line of Raffl, Nissner and Schneider was particularly dangerous. Time and again, the Red Bulls used cross-ice passes directly in front of the goal, where the home side's goalkeeper Olivier Roy was the first to stop them. Further attacks by the Hungarians were mostly intercepted by Salzburg in defense, only in the last two minutes did the Hungarians turn up the heat and become immediately dangerous. The Red Bulls were behind after 20 minutes, but played a good first period.
The Hungarians scored again in the second period. In the power play, Joshua Atkinson scored with a follow-up shot (25') after Atte Tolvanen was able to fend off the first shot. Salzburg immediately followed up, but now it was an open game with ups and downs and good shots on both sides. As the third progressed, however, the home side had more and more of the play and caused the Red Bulls - Peter Schneider had Salzburg's best chance with a powerful shot from the left face-off circle (37') - major problems in front of their own goal in the final three minutes. But Atte Tolvanen fished everything away and kept the deficit at 0:2 after 40 minutes.
Thomas Raffl brought the Red Bulls back into contention, the captain scored on a 5-on-3 power play to make it 1:2 (43'), taking Ryan Murphy's shot in front of goal and letting the goalie off. After that, the game was finally played with an open goal. First, the Red Bulls had further opportunities in the dying minutes of the powerplay, but immediately afterwards there was a fire in front of Salzburg's goal. Atte Tolvanen saved against Akos Mihaly (48'), who was alone in front of goal. But a little later, the Hungarians capitalized on another powerplay in an increasingly rough game (49'), Anze Kuralt scoring to give them a 3:1 lead. But the Red Bulls held on, Lucas Thaler shot from the half-high slot to make it 2:3 (53'). In the last four minutes, the Red Bulls played like they were on the powerplay and shot from all angles, Atte Tolvanen also left his goal in the 60th minute, but four seconds before the end, the Hungarians managed to score into the empty net and that was also the final score. The Red Bulls lost 2:4 and thus had to admit defeat for the first time in 14 games against the Hungarians.
