Game recap
The Red Bulls immediately took control of the encounter and circled around the visitors' goal. Drake Rymsha (4th) had the first top chance in the half-high slot, after which Salzburg created many more scoring situations in which goalkeeper Marco de Filippo Roia had his hand on them for a long time. Asiago were occasionally able to break free from their grip, but were rarely dangerous. Randal Gazzola's solo run through the Salzburg defense (9.) was saved by goalkeeper David Kickert with a strong reaction. And Salzburg again and again: like with Troy Bourke from close range (10th) or Thomas Raffl with a clear view from half distance (14th). But even with many skirmishes in front of the goalkeeper, the disc would not go in during the first period. Shortly before the break, the visitors also became really dangerous for the first time in the power play and forced David Kickert to intervene. The teams went into the first break goalless, although the Red Bulls had more than enough chances to take the lead.
And then it almost happened as it had to. Asiago took advantage of their second powerplay and took the lead with a goal from William Rapuzzi (25'). This made the visitors more courageous and the Red Bulls had more trouble creating chances. But they did. Benjamin Nissner directly in front of goal (30'), shortly afterwards also Peter Schneider, who did not get the right shot on target. Mario Huber had one of the best chances while short-handed, missing the half-open goal after a 3-on-2 counter-attack (34'). The Red Bulls continued to set the tone and showed nice moves, but they were not compelling enough when it came to finishing and could not overcome the visitors' goalie in the second period either, leaving them trailing 0:1 after 40 minutes.
Lucas Thaler started the final period with a hammer shot from the slot. Salzburg pressed again, but also ran into counterattacks. Alexander Ierullo was unable to get past David Kickert after a short solo run (44'). Really good chances now had to be worked hard for. Peter Schneider tried from distance (48'), a hard shot from Ryan Murphy ended up with the goalkeeper (50'), Thomas Raffl was a touch too late with the pass in front of goal (51'). The good opportunities were now piling up, and from the 50th minute onwards it was like playing in the powerplay. Then finally the redemption, Chay Genoway scored with the farmer's trick to equalize 1:1 (56.). Just 30 seconds later, Troy Bourke deflected Phillip Sinn's shot for a 2:1 lead. That was the (late) decision, and Mario Huber capped it off with an empty-netter in his 501st ICE game.
