Game recap
The top-of-the-table game lived up to its name right from the start. Both teams set an enormous pace and played clean combination ice hockey with a constant drive towards the goal. There were fluid attacks and good finishes on both sides, which at least in the first period still bounced off the opposing defense or goalkeepers Atte Tolvanen for the Red Bulls and Olivier Roy for the visitors. Salzburg combined well in front of goal and also had two or three strong scenes with follow-up shots. The Hungarians screened well in front of the opponent's goal and often attempted shots from distance. In the only shorthanded game of the first period, the Red Bulls acted confidently and Atte Tolvanen also saved the best chance for the visitors after a solo shot by Kristof Nemeth (17').
The visitors went ahead on their second power play (24'), Istvan Terbocs scoring with a powerful shot from the half-high slot. Tim Harnisch had the home side's next good chance from half-distance (26'), followed by a strong Salzburg attacking phase. The Hungarians waited for counter-attacks, Janos Hari was just pushed away on a possible solo run (31'). Troy Bourke missed the puck directly in front of goal shortly afterwards (32'). But Peter Hochkofler then held his nerve and scored the equalizer with a clever rebound move (32'). The Red Bulls were now a touch more active, but the Hungarians kept at it. The Red Bulls really turned up the heat in the final minutes and continued to produce good shots from distance, for example from Dennis Robertson and Philipp Wimmer, but the scores were level going into the second break.
Things became more emotional in the final period, but the Red Bulls pressed forward more and created good chances in front of the tight defense. In the 47th minute, Ryan Murphy took the measure from distance and put the disc right into the corner of the net to take the lead for the first time. The Red Bulls continued to attack and were now almost impossible to get out of the attacking zone. And then Peter Hochkofler scored again, deflecting Ryan Murphy's shot in front of goal (51'). Even short-handed, the Red Bulls did not let things get out of hand and created further top-class chances, dominating the final period overall. Peter Schneider scored the final goal in the final second in front of an enthusiastic crowd to secure a deserved 4:1 home win.
