Game recap
The Red Bulls started the game in Asiago with a quick goal (2nd) with the same line-up as in the last home game on Friday against Ljubljana (without Benjamin Nissner and Tyler Lewington). Lucas Thaler scored from a scrum right in front of Justin Fazio's goal. But the home side quickly got into the game and soon put pressure on Salzburg's goal. They equalized with their first powerplay, William Rapuzzi was played free at the right post (12'). The Red Bulls then had a good spell and Paul Huber had the best chance with a one-timer from close range (17'). But just as the final buzzer sounded, Asiago took the lead, Allan McShane was left alone in front of goal and netted to make it 2:1. Salzburg goalie Atte Tolvanen was unable to prevent the goal into the corner of the net.
At the start of the second period, the Red Bulls were outnumbered against a dangerous power play. Salzburg then turned up the heat and got a lot of shots on goal, but not against a tight defense. In the 30th minute, Atte Tolvanen thwarted a striker rushing in alone while short-handed and then Salzburg's best phase to date began. The Red Bulls then had to score twice in the powerplay from the 33rd minute before the goal counted. Adam Payerl's goal was disallowed after a video review, but shortly afterwards Peter Hochkofler got through in front of the net (35') and scored a deserved equalizer. The Red Bulls had further good chances, such as Peter Schneider from the half-high slot (36) and the lively Lucas Thaler again and again. After 40 minutes and a strong second period from Salzburg, the score remained 2:2.
After the break, the Red Bulls immediately pushed forward and created many good scenes in front of goal. Asiago soon followed suit and things became more intense and heated on the ice. But the Red Bulls continued to have more possession and finally took the lead. Philipp Wimmer took a shot from the blue line (49') and hit the gap just right. From then on, it was an open exchange of blows with chances on both sides. In the final phase, however, the Red Bulls played almost exclusively in the attacking zone and rewarded themselves with the fourth goal. Troy Bourke (57) tapped in Florian Baltram's perfect cross-ice pass at the left post. In the 59th minute, Dennis Robertson increased the lead to 5:2 with an empty net in his 200th league game (his 85th for Salzburg) and Lucas Thaler added a brace shortly before the end. The Red Bulls thus won 6:2 in Asiago thanks to an incredible final third and also returned to the top of the table.
