Game recap
The Red Bulls got off to a strong start, immediately showing a drive towards goal and keeping their opponents busy in the defensive zone. The first good chances came from Thomas Raffl from the slot (5th) and Mario Huber with a poke in front of the visitors' goalie Robin Rahm (6th). Four minutes later, Mario Huber had the next chance at the right post, but was also unable to convert the follow-up shot. The visitors then became more active with their first dangerous forays forward, which did not yet cause Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen any problems. And again and again the Red Bulls; they stormed incessantly at the goal, let the disk run, also tried from a distance. During Salzburg's first powerplay shortly before the break, the ball bobbled a few times in front of the Slovenian goal but wouldn't go in. Salzburg had a clear advantage, but went into the first break goalless.
The Red Bulls continued in the same vein in the second period. Florian Baltram had the first top chance with a one-timer (23') after Atte Tolvanen made two saves while short-handed. Peter Schneider then finally freed the Red Bulls when he netted from an acute angle directly at the right post to take the lead (29'). Salzburg continued to dictate the game, but the Slovenians were now more often dangerous in front of their own goal. In the 35th minute, however, the Red Bulls staged a 2-on-1 counter-attack, with Thomas Raffl taking Peter Schneider's cross-field pass directly and scoring his 300th league goal for the club and 250th for Salzburg. Four minutes later, Lucas Thaler almost increased the lead to 3:0 with a copy of the second goal at the right post, which the home side deserved to take into the second break.
In the final period, the visitors were initially dangerous during a power play. The Red Bulls held out and then played for the fourth goal. Most of the game now took place in the offensive zone again, where the Red Bulls were on the move and only had to be careful when the visitors made the occasional break. Atte Tolvanen was on the alert for Miha Bericic's top chance, who took a hard one-timer right in front of him (51'). And just when the good attacks of the Slovenians increased, Troy Bourke was quickest with the rebound after a blue-liner hammer shot by Ryan Murphy and made it 4:0. Two minutes before the end, Trevor Gooch scored a goal for the visitors in the power play, but that did not change the clear 4:1 victory of the Red Bulls against Ljubljana.
