Game recap
Due to the league's stipulation that only the players who featured in the abandoned match on October 1 were allowed to play in today's supplementary match, as well as players currently on convalescence, a number of players were missing on both sides. The game got underway immediately. After an initial period of pressure from the home side, the Red Bulls quickly got into the game and subsequently had more possession, even if the game was constantly up and down. In an intense first period without many interruptions and without penalties, the Red Bulls were closer to the first goal than the home side, for example Ali Wukovits with a good chance from the slot (18th), but in the last minute of the first period Vienna's Trevor Cheek netted a cross-ice pass in front of Salzburg goalie Atte Tolvanen on a breakaway to take a 1:0 lead at the break, taking advantage of one of the few good chances.
The game was more even in the second period, with both teams neutralizing each other and hardly allowing any good shots on goal for a long time. It became more intense from the half onwards, with Salzburg pressing and pinning the Capitals in their zone at times. Atte Tolvanen was on hand to stop a good 2-on-1 counter-attack by the Caps (31') and the Red Bulls immediately took over again. Florian Baltram tried from the slot (34). Despite further opportunities, Salzburg were not dangerous enough in the direction of the goal and towards the end of the third the Viennese were able to break free from their temporary grip and took the one-goal lead into the second break.
The home side started the final period with two or three good chances and finally increased their lead (45'). Trevor Cheek had space in the half-high slot and scored to make it 2:0. The Red Bulls then stepped up their attacking and tempo, but lacked the decisive ideas in front of goal and this also opened up space for the Viennese to launch counter-attacks, through which they remained dangerous. And it was precisely one such counter-attack that decided the game in the 56th minute: Hampus Eriksson scored after a solo run to give them a 3:0 lead and Dominique Heinrich made it 4:0 shortly afterwards with a powerplay goal from the blue line. Vienna goalkeeper Sebastian Wraneschitz was able to keep a clean sheet today.
