Game recap
The Red Bulls tried to take the initiative immediately, but met strong resistance and had difficulty creating chances. The guests soon had a strong phase including a powerplay, in which goalkeeper David Kickert had to intervene several times. Peter Schneider then had a top chance in the powerplay, hitting the bar in the follow-up (11th). The Red Bulls then did more for the game and had several opportunities in the 18th minute, but Ali Wukovits from the face-off circle, Luca Auer from the slot and Paul Huber directly in front of the goal could not yet overcome Vienna's support Stefan Steen. So it went scoreless into the first break.
The Salzburgers remained the more active team in the second section, but it was a tough struggle for the decisive advantage. The game kept getting bogged down in duels with few good opportunities. Like Lucas Thaler's dangerous shot from the half-distance (27th) or Peter Schneider's attemptless from the slot (29th). With a great feat, David Kickert then thwarted Vienna's top chance from Leon Wallner (31st), who fired directly in front of the goal with a one-timer. And the goalkeeper was still challenged, the guests were now very dangerous in a total of three powerplays and closer to the first goal than the Red Bulls, who, however, with selfless defensive work - including 48 seconds of 3:5-underdog - kept the zero.
Also in the final third, the Red Bulls remained the active post, worked tirelessly to the goal and increased the pressure, while the Viennese remained dangerous with occasional counterattacks. Vienna's Stefan Steen was also always at the disc in some scuffling situations. And then the guests took the lead, Carsen Twarynski scored from the half-distance (53rd). In the last minutes only the Red Bulls played and Adam Payerl scored with a powerful shot from the right face-off circle in the 59th minute to equalize. This led to overtime, in which the Capitals quickly used an early powerplay - Carsen Twarynski scored again - and snatched the second point.
