Course of the game
The first minutes belonged to the Red Bulls (without Thomas Raffl, Benjamin Nissner, Lucas Thaler and Philipp Wimmer). They put pressure on immediately, but not yet without embarrassing Villach's defense. Ryan Murphy tested Villach's backstop Jean-Philippe Lamoureux with a rich shot from the slot (7th). The home side then got into the game better, from halfway through the first period it was back and forth. Salzburg's goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen was more busy, among other things, held the good shot of Dylan MacPherson from the slot (10.). In the counterattack Tim Harnisch hit the crossbar (11.). Troy Bourke had Salzburg's best chance when he suddenly appeared alone in front of the goal (15th), was just prevented from shooting. Then Villach took the lead, Alexander Rauchenwald was the beneficiary of a Salzburg defensive mistake and netted from close range (16.). A second (power play) goal was subsequently disallowed to Villach for high sticking. Peter Schneider also had a chance directly in front of JPL in Villach's good final period (17.), but VSV took the lead into the dressing room after a fast-paced first period.
Just one and a half minutes after the restart, Villach added to their tally, Robert Sabolic received the pass directly into the slot and immediately took off (22nd). The game remained fast, the duels became tougher, also because the Red Bulls increased their efforts to get the equalizer. However, there were not many top chances in the further course, even though the game went up and down in a highly exciting way. Peter Schneider was unlucky with a chance right at the post, the disc went just past (29th). Atte Tolvanen remained the winner in the solo of Robert Sabolic (32.). Both goalkeepers thwarted further good opportunities, after another entertaining 20 minutes, the home side led 2-0 at the second break.
Adam Payerl had the first good opportunity from the slot in the final period (42nd). But the Red Bulls found it increasingly difficult to build up play against the tight defense, hardly becoming dangerous even on a 30-second 5-on-3 overtime (47th). A hard powerplay shot from Mario Huber landed on JP Lamoureux (48th). The Red Bulls continued to play vehemently forward, the game became more heated, Villach thus came to highly dangerous counterattack opportunities. In the 59th minute, Peter Schneider scored the equalizer with six players on a rebound after a Troy Bourke shot, but it was not enough to equalize. The Red Bulls thus failed to score for the first time in their 12th game.
