Recap
Both teams started offensively oriented and immediately set a good pace. Initially without any great opportunities, Linz's Marco Brucker (9th) had the first top chance with a one-timer in front of Salzburg's goalie David Kickert, who was then also on hand for Graham Knott's unmarked shot from the half-high slot. Then Salzburg increased the pressure and played with a lot of possession in the offensive zone. A good shot by Chay Genoway from half distance went just past Rasmus Tirronen's box (10th), Benjamin Nissner tried it from an acute angle(12th). The Red Bulls combined with a lot of movement on the ice and repeatedly brought the disc dangerously in front of the goal, just missed the decisive taker in some attacks. After 20 minutes, the game went into the dressing rooms without a goal, with the Red Bulls having the advantage.
After a breakaway chance by Graham Knott (23rd), the Red Bulls completely took control of the game in the second period and literally besieged the Linz goal. Ali Wukovits (24th) and Paul Huber (25th) both on the power play had chances from close range. Rasmus Tirronen solved many dicey situations in front of his box that arose from Salzburg's constant pressure. The Linzers rarely got into the offensive zone, but promptly took the lead in the 35th minute from one of the few attacks. Niklas Bretschneider scored on the follow-up shot from an acute angle. However, the Red Bulls had the answer and equalized a little later, highly deserved. Adam Payerl deflected Troy Bourke's pass into the net on the power play and celebrated his first goal for the Red Bulls. After 40 minutes, the score was 1-1, which was good enough for the home side at that point.
