Game recap
It was straight down to business, with the visitors dominating the first three minutes. Then the Red Bulls were also in the game and made their first good attempts on goal. It went up and down quickly, with Innsbruck having the better opportunities. Kevin Roy had a chance from close range in the powerplay (9'), but Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen was on the alert. Shortly afterwards, Adam Payerl's backhand shot on a solo run while short-handed (9.) was decisively blocked. Innsbruck's Jan Lattner also hit the bar in the 13th minute, but the top chances remained rare as both teams mostly neutralized each other. The Red Bulls' defense held firm during two power plays by the visitors and the teams went into the dressing rooms goalless after 20 quick minutes.
The home side became more dominant in the second period. Thomas Raffl tested Innsbruck goalie Evan Buitenhuis (22'), shortly afterwards Mario Huber was in front of goal in the powerplay (23'), Kalle Myllymaa was on a solo run (23'). The visitors then struck on their third powerplay, however, with Kevin Roy netting from a tight angle (26). The Red Bulls then pressed, played around the visitors' goal for several minutes and created many good scenes, but Evan Buitenhuis thwarted the strong shots. And the visitors remained highly dangerous in their offensive actions. But the Salzburg team struggled to finish, with many good attacks 'fizzling out' in front of goal. The Red Bulls also had no real grip in the powerplay from the 36th minute onwards and shortly before the second break Innsbruck's Gordon Green scored from the slot with a low shot to give the visitors a 2:0 lead.
Salzburg immediately stormed the goal in the final third, but Innsbruck quickly scored their third goal from a counter-attack through Nicholas Albano (42'). The Red Bulls kept going and four minutes later finally got their deserved first goal, Florian Baltram (46) converting a cross-ice pass from an acute angle to make it 1:3. And Kalle Myllymaa almost scored the double (47), only to be denied by the goalie on a 2-on-1 counter-attack. Suddenly the Red Bulls were back in full force, shooting at goal time and again and giving the Tyroleans a real run for their money. Lucas Thaler hit the bar after a strong individual action from the half-high slot (52'). The game was now at boiling point, with only the Red Bulls playing. Chay Genoway actually managed to score the equalizer in the final minute with six outfield players, but it was not enough against the strong Innsbruck team.
