Game recap
Villach with a strong start. The home side started extremely offensively in the almost full Villach Stadthalle and took an early 2:0 lead. Elias Wallenta scored after a quick attack from the right face-off circle (8'). Three minutes later (11th), Andrew Desjardins increased the lead to 2:0 with a follow-up shot in the powerplay. Ex-Salzburg player John Hughes assisted and scored his 1000th goal (!) in the league. Then the Red Bulls - only Benjamin Nissner and new signing Drake Rymsha were missing today - got into the game better in what was still an incredibly fast encounter and scored the equalizer before the first break. Dennis Robertson was passed right in front of goal (18th) and beat Villach goalkeeper JP Lamoureux, who also set a milestone today with his 600th league game, with a hook. Villach led 2:1 after the first period due to the enormously powerful opening minutes and two overpayments, but Salzburg were very present towards the end.
In the second period, the Red Bulls initially dominated play, but the home side retook a two-goal lead with a cross-field pass directly in front of Salzburg goalie Atte Tolvanen and Anthony Luciani's (24') finish right at the post. The Red Bulls continued to control the game, Villach remained strong on the counter-attack. In the 31st minute, Paul Stapelfeldt picked up the disc at the blue line and, after a short solo run, shot into the corner of the net for his first goal of the season to tie the scores at 2:3. It continued to go back and forth, with both teams alternating top chances, prevented by top goalies on both sides. Villach's defense really got going in the final period, but took the 3:2 lead into the second break after another fast-paced third.
In the final third, both sides took it in turns to fire, the duels were tough but fair and the tempo remained extremely high. VSV increased the lead to 4:2, Maximilian Rebernig scored at the right post with a follow-up shot (46'). Four minutes later, Thomas Raffl scored in the high slot in the power play to bring the Red Bulls back to 3:4 (50'). The captain also had the next top chance with a one-timer right in front of goal (55'). Salzburg pressed, brought the discs in front of the goal and were now almost impossible to get out of the offensive zone. Two minutes before the end, Atte Tolvanen saved John Hughes' shot after a solo effort. In the end, Salzburg threw everything forward with six field players, but it remained a narrow 3:4 defeat in Villach after a spectacular game by both teams.
