Course of the game
The Red Bulls had the better opening minutes with a lot of forward pressure and the first, still harmless shots. Gradually, the home side opened up the game and tried to get closer with shots from distance. But Salzburg pressed more and took the lead when Thomas Raffl scored from half-distance past the defender (10'). Adam Helewka then had the first top chance for Bolzano, but was unable to convert directly in front of Atte Tolvanen (10'). The pressure from the South Tyroleans now increased, even though Ali Wukovits (14) and Mario Huber (15) were able to finish from promising positions. A number of shots from distance from Bolzano just missed the Salzburg goal or fell prey to Atte Tolvanen, who now had a lot to do. After an even 20 minutes, the score remained 1:0 for the Red Bulls.
From the second period onwards, the game was played with an open goal. The extremely close game was up and down with good shots on both sides and every duel was fought to the end. In the 36th minute, the Red Bulls took advantage of a switching mistake by the home side shortly before the offensive zone, Troy Bourke scored from an acute angle after a 3-on-1 attack to make it 2:0 (36'). It didn't take long for the home side to tie the scores, as Nicholas Saracino made it 1-2 after a 2-on-1 counter-attack (38'). After a hectic final phase in front of the Salzburg goal, the Red Bulls took the one-goal lead into the dressing room.
In the first few minutes of the final period, the Red Bulls kept their opponents well away from their own goal and pressed forward, with Bolzano's defense faltering at times. However, HCB became dangerous again and narrowly missed the target a couple of times from distance. On the first power play of the final period, the home side finally equalized through Dustin Gazley (50'). The thriller on the ice continued with alternating attacks, the home side now having the better chances. In the final phase, the Red Bulls were back in control and whirled in front of goal. But the score remained 2:2 and extra time was needed.
In the first 20 extra minutes by hook or by crook, HCB was more pressing and caused maximum danger in two overtime games, among other things, with Atte Tolvanen saving several really good chances. In between, the Red Bulls also had opportunities, Mario Huber came closest to scoring on a solo under-number play (76'). But it went into the second overtime with 3 vs. 3 and Scott Kosmachuk put the disc in the net in the 93rd minute on the power play after many more good chances for both teams. The Red Bulls thus won 3:2 in the second overtime and now lead the semi-final series 3:1.
