Red Bulls lose third semi-final game against BolzanoAfter a good start, the Salzburg team lost 3:2 in overtime // win2day ICE Hockey League | PlayoffsEC Red Bull Salzburg was defeated for the first time in the win2day ICE Hockey League in the third game of the playoff semi-final series against HCB Südtirol Alperia by 2:3 in overtime. In the sold-out Eisarena Salzburg, the Red Bulls got off to the best possible start with a 2:0 lead after goals from Benjamin Nissner and Peter Schneider. However, the visitors then got into the game better and equalized to 2:2 before the second break. After a hard-fought but goalless third period, the South Tyroleans finally claimed victory in the evenly-matched overtime and reduced the deficit to 1:2 from their perspective in the best-of-seven series. The fourth semi-final game continues on Tuesday in Bolzano.

Course of the game
Ali Wukovits' shot from distance in the 2nd minute - the Red Bulls dominated the opening period and took the lead with their first powerplay. Benjamin Nissner made a lightning-quick save in the confusion in front of Sam Harvey's goal (9'). Shortly afterwards, Mario Huber had the next big chance with a shot from the slot (12'). Salzburg kept the pressure on and created further chances. The game then became rougher, but the Red Bulls kept their cool for the most part. A moment of shock came in the 18th minute when a Bolzano striker suddenly found himself alone in front of Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen while short-handed, but wasted the shot. In the final phase, the visitors pressed during a power play, but the Red Bulls took the 1:0 lead into the first break.
The visitors rang in the remaining three-and-a-half minutes of the second period with a shot off the bar. But Salzburg let everything bounce back and Peter Schneider increased the lead to 2:0 while still short-handed. The striker outmuscled the goalie behind the net and only had to tap it in (24'). Bolzano kept at it and worked their way back into the game, Daniel Frank scoring after a period of pressure to make it 1-2 (28'). It was now up and down and with a lot of traffic in front of goal, Bolzano also managed to equalize, Brad McClure was able to shoot in directly in front of goal (32'). The final phase belonged to HCB, who now piled on the pressure. Atte Tolvanen made several saves to keep the score at 2:2 after 40 minutes.

The Red Bulls regained the momentum in the final third. They took control of the offense again and had chances despite the tight spaces. But the Bolzano defense did a good job and didn't let anything in even during a Salzburg power play (47th). From the 50th minute onwards, the game was played with an open goal and changing opportunities, the game was on a knife's edge, fueled by many emotional duels. And so it went until the end of regular time and finally into the first extra time of the series. After good chances for the Red Bulls at the beginning, the visitors then had a strong phase and this time took their chance. Scott Valentine was served in the slot in front of Atte Tolvanen and scored to make it 3:2 for the visitors (69').

“We actually got off to a good start and also built up a 2:0 lead. We then lost the thread a bit in the second period. They came out hard, we didn't put up much of a fight and that's how they equalized. And then it was just a brutally tough game at eye level.”
