Course of the game
After a stormy start with a lot of speed, there was a first scuffle between all the players on the ice in front of the Salzburg goal in the 10th minute. Shortly afterwards, Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen made his first appearance on a good Bolzano powerplay and just as the shorthanded game ended, Peter Hochkofler, coming from the penalty box, was served 2-on-1 in front of the goal and scored from full stretch to make it 1-0 (12'). Four minutes later, the Red Bulls staged another 2-on-1 counter-attack, which Benjamin Nissner completed with a shot through the legs of Sam Harvey (16). Anthony Salinitri missed Bolzano's best chance, failing to get past Atte Tolvanen in front of the Salzburg goal (17'). After a turbulent first period, the Red Bulls led 2:0.
In the second period, the home side scored quickly on the powerplay, Braden Christoffer converting a pass directly in front of goal with a direct shot (23'). The air in front of Salzburg's goal was on fire during two further consecutive shorthanded periods, the Red Bulls prevented the impending equalizer with a lot of effort and luck. But halfway through the third period, Salzburg were back in full force and the game went up and down with opportunities on both sides. However, the Italians now had more of the play and repeatedly forced the Red Bulls into the defensive zone, where Atte Tolvanen and his front men did a self-sacrificing job and took the 2:1 lead into the dressing room after 40 minutes.
The battle for every inch of ice continued seamlessly in the final period. It went back and forth, with shots being taken from every position. The home side initially had more offensive possession, while the Red Bulls defended cleverly. However, Bolzano's Adam Helewka missed another top chance alone in front of goal (48'). Towards the end, the Red Bulls became more powerful again with dangerous shots. But Bolzano equalized in the 59th minute, after a brief confusion in front of goal Simon Bourque shot in to make it 2:2. But the Red Bulls had the answer; Peter Schneider scored from an extremely tight angle 55 seconds before the end to secure Salzburg's second semi-final win in Bolzano.
