The Red Bull Hockey Juniors got off to a strong start to the game, but Merano held firm and both teams created their first chances. The young Salzburg team overcame a first short-handed situation with ease. The Juniors were able to dominate the game for the first time thanks to the ensuing overtime opportunities, but were unable to capitalize on them. Back at full strength, Meran took over more of the offensive and capitalized on this in the 13th minute: Pascal Brunner scored to make it 1:0 for the home side. Meran goalkeeper Rudy Rigoni did not allow the Juniors to score in further overtime opportunities.
In the second period, Juniors goalkeeper Valentin Ankirchner was tested early on by Meran, but withstood the pressure with strong saves. Both teams alternated attacking phases and created shots, but without success. Towards the middle of the second period, the Juniors got into the game better and were increasingly able to take control, but were slowed down by being short-handed again. Alternating penalties kept the game eventful, but there was no further goal.
In the final period, Meran tried to make use of a remaining overtime, but the Juniors held out. The home side now set the tone, with Ankirchner making strong saves to prevent the team from falling further behind. Buoyed by the strong support, the Juniors stepped up their attacking efforts. However, Meran remained wide awake: Jakob Fuchs took advantage of a defensive error by the Juniors and set up Massimo Pietroniro, who netted in the 48th minute to make it 2:0. The young Salzburgers increased the pressure - with success: Vadim Schreiner scored after a pass from Leon Kolarik in the 52nd minute to make it 2:1. The game became increasingly physical and several penalties followed. The Juniors had the equalizer on their stick several times and took the goalkeeper off the ice in the final minutes. In the 60th minute, it was Adrian Gesson who converted a rebound from Daniel Assavolyuk to equalize. The Juniors created chances in overtime and even survived a short-handed situation, but Patrick Tomasini scored the decisive goal for Merano with 31 seconds remaining (65').
