Course of the game
After a crisp start with plenty of pace, the Red Bulls soon found themselves short-handed for several minutes, which the visitors were able to capitalize on with a goal from Lukas Haudum to make it 1:0 (9'). The game then really picked up pace. Graz's Trevor Gooch hit the bar during a 2-on-1 counter-attack (11') and Dennis Robertson also hit the metal from distance in the power play (15'). The Graz99ers were generally more pressing with the better opportunities in the first period, Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen defused a few more high-caliber chances from the visitors. As the third period progressed, the Red Bulls also improved and had their chances, but were not yet compelling enough to overcome Graz goalkeeper Nicolas Wieser.
In the second period, the Red Bulls initially took control of the game in the offensive zone, but the visitors were more efficient and extended their lead with their first real attack. Manuel Ganahl scored directly in front of goal with a one-timer to make it 2:0 (25'). The game flattened out a little after that. The Red Bulls had a lot of possession, but hardly any shooting opportunities. Graz defended well and only made pinpricks forward, but were dangerous again at the end during a powerplay and with a good final phase. Salzburg fought, but somehow couldn't really find their own game. The Red Bulls were 2-0 down after 40 minutes.
Troy Bourke had the first big chance in the final period when he fought his way through the defense but could only finish with a backhand (42'). A deflected shot from Florian Baltram went just wide of the goal (43). The Red Bulls noticeably stepped up the pace and Florian Baltram had the next good chance from half-distance (50'). Now only the Red Bulls were playing and the pressure was increasing. Graz were packed in close to the goal, making it difficult to get through. Suddenly, however, the ball was in the net. With six players on the ice, Ryan Murphy scored from distance in the 59th minute and in the same minute Thomas Raffl deflected a Peter Schneider shot to equalize the score at 2:2. In overtime, however, Frank Hora scored after just 31 seconds to seal Salzburg's first loss of the season against the Graz 99ers.
