Game report
The game got off to the worst possible start for the Juniors: Oscar Gustafsson put the visitors from Merano 1:0 ahead after just 36 seconds (1st). However, the home side responded with aggressive offensive actions and put the South Tyrolean defense under pressure early on. Salzburg had several opportunities, particularly when outnumbered, but were unable to capitalize on the 5-on-3 situation. Despite a clear advantage in chances, the first period remained goalless for the Juniors as goalkeeper Rudy Rigoni made several strong saves.
The Red Bulls kept up the pace in the second period and were rewarded: Daniel Assavolyuk scored in the 23rd minute after a pass from Maximilian Mackner to equalize the score at 1:1. Shortly afterwards, the young Salzburg team had to play short-handed, but continued to be dangerous and did not allow Meran any significant chances. After another penalty against the visitors, the Juniors took advantage of their powerplay: Phillip Sinn put his team ahead for the first time in the 30th minute. Salzburg kept up the pressure and in the 35th minute Nikita Kessler increased the lead to 3:1 with his first goal in the Alps Hockey League.
The Juniors continued to dominate in the final period, while Meran were more compact defensively. The South Tyroleans looked for counter-attacking opportunities with quick transitional play, but the Salzburg defense consistently stopped them. Lukas Hörl took advantage of another power play in the 48th minute with a one-timer to make it 4:1. Just one minute later (49th), Benedikt Krainer increased the lead to 5:1 with his second goal in the league. In the 57th minute, Constantin Humer crowned the Juniors' strong team performance with the final score of 6:1. With the home win against Merano, the Red Bull Hockey Juniors finish the basic round of the Alps Hockey League in 10th place and will start the Qualification Round A on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, away against HC Gherdeina valgardena.it.
