Game report
The encounter in the Salzburg ice arena got off to an even start with both teams playing a physical game. There were initially no top-class scoring chances as the defensive lines worked consistently. In the 13th minute, however, Davide Girardi managed to put the rebound into the net after a shot by Gabriel Galassiti to give Unterland a 1:0 lead. The Red Bulls responded with pressure phases of their own and made Cavaliers goalkeeper Laurin Foppa sweat, but were unable to score. Salzburg's defense survived a shorthanded period shortly before the end of the third without any damage.
In the second period, the home side tried to equalize. However, the South Tyroleans remained compact defensively and hardly allowed any dangerous shots. Both teams battled for the initiative, but compelling scoring chances were few and far between. Only a power play by the Juniors brought a little momentum, but they lacked the power to put anything countable on the scoreboard. As a result, the deficit remained narrow after 40 minutes.
The Cavaliers got off to the better start at the start of the final period: Kristians Samitis increased the lead to 2:0 with a beautiful finish in the 44th minute, and Moritz Kaufmann made it 3:0 just under a minute later (45'). The Red Bulls then failed to reduce the deficit. Despite several offensive actions and shots from all angles, they lacked the final consistency to overcome Foppa in the visitors' goal. The South Tyroleans remained dangerous on the counter-attack, but Juniors keeper Valentin Ankirchner also saved several chances. Salzburg upped the tempo again in the final minutes and took risks, but in the end it remained 0:3.
