The match at the Podmežakla Arena began at eye level, with both teams feeling each other out and creating their first chances early on. After an intense back-and-forth, the goalkeepers ensured that the score remained 0-0 until the 10th minute. Only Florian Lanzinger broke through the defensive barricade when he scored in the 11th minute to give the Juniors a 1:0 lead after strong preparatory work by Adrian Gesson. Both teams then tried to create further offensive accents, but were thwarted by their opponents' defense. Shortly before the end of the third period, Salzburg had to survive a short-handed situation, but goalie Luca Haitzmann did not allow a goal.
However, Jesenice used the remainder of their superior numbers effectively in the second period: Jasa Jenko equalized the score at 1:1 in the 21st minute. The Red Bulls immediately pressed for the lead again and created some good opportunities, but were repeatedly thwarted by the Slovenian goalkeeper. Bolstered by their support, the home side now managed to take control of the game and fired at Haizmann from all angles. But he also withstood the onslaught. The game led to some heated scenes; there were several penalties on both sides. However, the game remained a tight draw until the second break, as the Juniors were unable to capitalize on their first superior numbers of the game.
In the third period, both teams maintained their intensity and played out an open exchange of blows. In the 50th minute, Jesenice took the lead through Jack Lyons. The young Salzburg team then threw everything forward, but had to survive another short-handed spell. It was only in a 5-on-3 situation (57') that Luca Kogler managed to tie the score at 2:2 after preparatory work by Adrian Gesson and Moritz Warnecke. The Juniors sniffed out the chance of three points shortly before the end, but Benedikt Krainer was unable to capitalize on a great opportunity. In extra time, it was finally Santeri Sillanpaa who secured the home win for Jesenice in the 64th minute.
