Course of the game
With Peter Schneider, Benjamin Nissner and Lucas Thaler out sick yesterday, the Red Bulls were missing eleven regulars. Scott Kosmachuk was back instead. Support also came from academy players Florian Lanzinger (20), who only recently arrived from Villach, Leon Kolarik (17) and Luca Kogler (18), who was also making his professional debut.
Optimal start for the home side. It took less than two minutes for Chay Genoway to score from the slot in the power play and take an early lead (2.). This quickly opened up the game, which immediately went up and down with good shots on both sides. The Red Bulls then struck again in the powerplay. Mario Huber shot from distance and Klagenfurt goalkeeper Sebastian Dahm had to let it pass for the second time (14th). Less than a minute later, Nash Nienhuis hammered the disc from the face-off circle into the far corner for a 3:0 lead (14'), whereupon Sebastian Dahm made way for Florian Vorauer in the Klagenfurt goal. In the 16th minute, Salzburg's Luca Auer had to leave the ice with a time penalty, but the Red Bulls fought for four and a half minutes until the break and held on to their 3:0 lead after an incredible opening period.
In the second half, the pressure from the visitors increased noticeably after an initial Salzburg powerplay. The Red Bulls defended strongly, but also had good chances later on. Philipp Krening after a short solo run (28'), Ryan Murphy after a 2 on 1 (35'). Salzburg's goalie Atte Tolvanen was perfectly prepared and showed his class with some dangerously deflected shots. The KAC had a lot of possession, but were constantly hindered by Salzburg's defense in the build-up and were also unable to score in the second period.
The visitors continued to play at pace for the first goal. The Red Bulls kept at it and continued to push. Mario Huber scored directly in front of goal and made it 4:0 with his second goal (45'). Atte Tolvanen then defused Simeon Schwinger's solo shot (46'). However, the home side didn't pull back and made their own attacking moves, with Andrew Rowe having the next big chance in the power play (50'). The game continued to go back and forth in the final period and Andrew Rowe's goal from the left face-off circle finally made it 5:0 against Klagenfurt, who simply couldn't find a way against this combative Salzburg team and goalie Atte Tolvanen, who celebrated his second league shutout.
