Course of the match
The game started as planned. With 1:10 minutes played, Peter Hochkofler poked the disc over the line during a short scrum in front of the Innsbruck goal. The 23-year-old goalie Jakob Brandner had to let the disc pass between his pads, but was then on hand to save several good Salzburg opportunities. The Red Bulls largely dominated proceedings and had many chances, but were initially unable to add to their tally. At the other end, goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen did not have much to do, but was called upon to make a few dangerous advances. Innsbruck's Lukas Bär had perhaps the best chance with a powerful shot from the left face-off circle (15th).
In the second period, Scott Kosmachuk scored immediately after Benjamin Nissner had won a face-off to make it 2:0 (24'). But the home side played more courageously than before the break and actually equalized. Jeremy Bracco finished right in front of goal (25') and Mark Rassell was credited as the scorer to make it 2:2, the disk bouncing unhappily off the skate of a Salzburg defender into the goal with the penalty indicated (30'). The Red Bulls then stepped up the pace and shifted the game completely into the offensive zone. But Innsbruck defended hard and made life difficult for the Red Bulls. Mario Huber had one of the best opportunities on the rebound, but he missed the half-empty goal under pressure (36'). After 40 minutes it was 2:2.
The Red Bulls upped the tempo again in the final third and worked on their opponents' goal. And then it worked. Benjamin Nissner, who was back today alongside the comeback of Ali Wukovits and the return of Florian Baltram and Troy Bourke, scored on a rebound to give the Red Bulls a 3:2 lead (45'), which was increased to two goals just half a minute later by Andrew Rowe, who had plenty of time on 3 on 1 (45'). With Florian Baltram's first goal of the season (49'), the preliminary decision was finally made. The success was finally crowned by Leon Kolarik, the 17-year-old forward scored in the final minute of the powerplay to make it 6:2 and secure his first professional goal in his 6th ICE game with the Red Bulls.
