Game report
The encounter began with an early short-handed situation for the Juniors, which they survived with aplomb. This was followed by a lively back-and-forth with chances on both sides. An overpayment opportunity helped Salzburg to create more chances, but Sisak goalkeeper Vilim Rosandic saved all attempts. The teams went into the first break goalless.
The second period got off to a brilliant start: Leon Kolarik scored after just 22 seconds (21') after converting a pass from Jakob Schnabl to make it 1:0. With another overtime spell, it looked as if the Juniors could extend their lead. But instead, Tyrone Bronte (27) came back at full strength to equalize at 1:1. In the 31st minute, however, Salzburg took full advantage of another powerplay situation: Paul Vinzens restored the 2:1 advantage after a pass from new signing Florian Lanzinger. Despite a number of shorthanded situations towards the end of the third period, the Juniors, led by a strong Valentin Ankirchner, defended their narrow lead until the second buzzer.
The two teams continued to exchange blows in the final third. Sisak relied on physical play and tried to force an equalizer with targeted attacks, while the Juniors were always on the lookout for counterattacks. It was not until the 58th minute that Adrian Gesson managed to increase the lead to 3:1 after preparatory work from Luca Kogler and Lanzinger again. In a final offensive, the Croatians took their goalkeeper off the ice and tried a sixth field player. However, this move paid off: goalkeeper Valentin Ankirchner took advantage of the opportunity and fired the puck into the empty net in the 59th minute to secure the 4:1 away win with an empty-net goal.
