Game report
Without Maximilian Wurzer, Leon Kolarik and Lukas Hörl, who are playing for EC Red Bull Salzburg in the win2day ICE Hockey League, the Red Bull Hockey Juniors had to survive a shorthanded situation early in the first period. Goalkeeper Luca Haitzmann, who was making his home debut, saved several shots from the Slovenians with ease. Back at full strength, Salzburg became increasingly dangerous and gained an advantage, but were unable to capitalize on it. It developed into an open exchange of blows, but Celje had a little more drive on goal, while Haitzmann kept the Juniors in the game with strong saves.
In the second period, both teams initially failed to score until the Juniors were caught out cold in the 27th minute: Ahmet Jakupovic made it 0:1 after just eight seconds of power play. Mikus Mintautiskis increased the lead to 0:2 just ten seconds later (27'), making it a double strike within a very short space of time. Salzburg responded promptly with offensive actions, but the visitors' goalie Aleksanteri Heiskanen was initially unbeatable. It was not until shortly before the end of the second period (38') that Florian Lanzinger scored his first goal for the Red Bulls to make it 1-2 after preparatory work by Nikita Kessler and Paul Oberhauser.
In the final third, both teams fought for every inch. Although the Juniors had further chances, the puck would not cross the goal line. After being outnumbered in the middle of the third period, the home side pushed harder and harder for the equalizer, but missed it despite numerous shots from all angles. The Slovenians defended uncompromisingly and made pinpricks with dangerous counter-attacks. In the final seconds, the Red Bulls tried everything again with a sixth field player, but in the end it was not enough to equalize.
