Game report
The game started with a high tempo and committed physical play on both sides. Initial offensive actions by the Juniors were followed by dangerous counterattacks by the Broncos. However, the score remained 0-0 in the first period as Juniors goalie Valentin Ankirchner and his counterpart on the home side thwarted all attempts.
The second period got off to an unfortunate start for the young Salzburgers: After just 53 seconds (21st), Connor Sanvido deflected a shot from Adam Capannelli to give the South Tyroleans a 1:0 lead. The Juniors reacted, won their second overtime and made the most of it: Daniel Assavolyuk scored in the 26th minute to make it 1:1 after preparatory work by Paul Vinzens, but the home side's renewed powerplay afterwards turned the tide when James Livingston (32) netted to make it 2:1.
The Broncos also got off to a lightning start at the beginning of the final period: Just 44 seconds after the restart (41st), Adam Capannelli increased the lead to 3:1 before the Juniors tried their hand at scoring the equalizer in another overtime situation. Despite good shooting opportunities and even a penalty shot, Broncos goalkeeper Dominik Groh remained unassailable. In the final phase, Salzburg threw everything forward, took Ankirchner off the ice and even tried 6-on-4 at times, but the defense of the sixth-placed team in the table from Sterzing held firm and prevented the Red Bulls from scoring another goal.
